⸺ The Challenge

A critical gap in healthcare supply

In the early days of the pandemic, Medcart founder Phil Leahy saw first-hand the pressure being placed on frontline healthcare workers. After launching Frontliners — a social enterprise providing care kits to 30,000+ health workers — he identified a deeper systemic problem: there was no centralised way for hospitals and care providers to locate, evaluate, and order PPE from the growing number of suppliers entering the market.

"We realised an online portal could be developed that brought together PPE suppliers and customers. The result was Medcart and we had it up and running in just one month." - Phil

1

Fragmented, hard-to-access supply

Healthcare providers had no single source to find and compare PPE across a growing number of domestic and international distributors, making procurement slow, inconsistent, and unreliable during a critical time.

2

No mechanism for supplier discovery

There was no mechanism in place to assist staff in locating manufacturers and placing PPE orders — leaving healthcare workers without a reliable way to find the supplies they needed.

3

Suppliers lacked a route to market

Manufacturers also faced the challenge of finding new customers and informing them of their range of offerings — with no central platform where buyers and sellers could connect.

4

Quality assurance in a high-stakes setting

Hospitals needed to be confident that the supplies they were sourcing met the quality requirements for use in a highly infectious environment — with some products required to meet Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods standards.

⸺ The Solution

Built on Marketplacer. Live in a Month.

After evaluating a range of platforms, Phil Leahy chose Marketplacer as the foundation for the Medcart portal — enabling a sophisticated multi-supplier marketplace to go from idea to live in just four weeks, with all core commerce operations handled out of the box.

Centralised supplier catalogue

Medcart removes the need for PPE suppliers to build and maintain their own ecommerce presence. Providers can list products with images, specs, and pricing — and update listings instantly as stock changes.

Rapid product discovery for care workers

Healthcare staff can search the portal, compare products across multiple suppliers, confirm availability, and place orders — all from a single interface designed for speed and ease of use.

Fully managed payments infrastructure

All payment transactions are handled by the Marketplacer platform — removing operational overhead from suppliers and giving healthcare buyers a trusted, consistent checkout experience.

Klaviyo integration for customer intelligence

The Klaviyo email automation platform was connected to Marketplacer, giving Medcart deep visibility into customer behaviour and evolving procurement needs.

Australian-based customer support

Medcart provides post-sale support through a locally operated contact centre — ensuring healthcare customers receive timely, knowledgeable assistance from agents who understand the compliance and care context.

Platform built for growth

With the marketplace foundation in place, Medcart is expanding its product range into pharmaceutical supplies and broader healthcare verticals.
